Tato evropská norma existuje ve třech oficiálních verzích (anglické, francouzské, německé). Verze v každém jiném jazyce přeložená členem CEN/CENELEC do jeho vlastního jazyka, za kterou zodpovídá a kterou notifikuje Ústřednímu sekretariátu, má stejný status jako oficiální verze. |
This European Standard exists in three official versions (English, French, German). A version in any other language made by translation under the responsibility of a CEN/CENELEC member into its own language and notified to the Central Secretariat has the same status as the official versions. |

Text ISO/IEC Pokynu 2:1996 vypracovaný Výborem pro posuzování shody (CASCO) byl převzat technickou komisí CEN/CLC/TC1 ”Kritéria pro orgány provádějící posuzování shody” a byl schválen CEN a CENELEC jako evropská norma. Sekretariát této technické komise zajišťuje NSF. |
The text of the ISO/IEC Guide 2:1996 of the Committee on Conformity Assessment (CASCO) has been taken over as a European Standard by Technical Committee CEN/CLC/TC 1 ”Criteria for conformity assessment bodies”, the secretariat of which is held by NSF, and approved by CEN and CENELEC. |

Této evropské normě musí být nejpozději v srpnu 1998 udělen status národní normy, a to buď vydáním identického textu, nebo schválením k přímému používání, a národní normy, které jsou s ní v rozporu, musí být zrušeny nejpozději v srpnu 1998. |
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by August 1998, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by August 1998. |

Zatímco ISO a IEC společně zajišťují mezinárodní systém normalizace pokrývající široký rozsah zejména technických otázek, zasahují všeobecné pojmy normalizace za jejich oblast působnosti. Pro účely ISO a IEC se má tedy definice normalizace (1.1) vysvětlovat spolu s definicemi norma (3.2) a konsenzus (1.7). |
Whilst ISO and IEC jointly provide the international framework for standardization, covering a wide range of mainly technical matters, the general concept of standardization extends beyond their terms of reference. For ISO and IEC purposes, the definition of standardization (1.1) should accordingly be read in conjunction with the definitions of standard (3.2) and consensus (1.7). |

The general terminological principles guiding the revisions of Guide 2 since 1986 have been those established by Technical Committee ISO/TC 37, Terminology (principles and coordination). |

Termíny vyjadřující konkrétnější pojmy mohou být zpravidla vytvořeny kombinací termínů vyjadřujících všeobecnější pojmy, které tak vytvářejí ”stavební prvky”. Výběr termínů a tvorba definic v tomto pokynu jsou založeny na tomto přístupu, a to v případech, kdy ekvivalentní anglické, francouzské a ruské složené termíny obsahují stejné ”stavební prvky”. |
Terms expressing more specific concepts may generally be constructed by a combination of terms representing more general concepts. The latter terms thus form ”building blocks”, and the selection of terms and the construction of definitions within this Guide has been based on this approach in cases where equivalent English, French and Russian combined terms contain the same ”building blocks”. |

In this way, additional terms can be readily constructed within the framework of the Guide. For example, the term safety standard can be defined as a standard (3.2) concerned with freedom from unacceptable risk of harm (definition of safety in 2.5). |

Definice uvedené v tomto pokynu jsou přímo ekvivalentní v angličtině, francouzštině a ruštině. Byly zformulovány co možná nejstručněji. V případě, že se termíny již dříve vyskytly v jiných definicích, jsou v tomto pokynu vytištěny tučným písmem. |
The definitions included in this Guide are directly equivalent in the English, French and Russian languages. They have been drawn up as concisely as practicable. Where they first occur in other definitions, terms which have themselves been defined in this Guide are printed in bold type. |

Poznámky připojené k některým definicím nabízejí objasnění, vysvětlení nebo příklady a tím usnadňují porozumění popisovaným pojmům. V určitých případech se mohou poznámky v jednotlivých jazycích z jazykových důvodů lišit, nebo mohou být připojeny doplňující poznámky. |
The notes appended to certain definitions offer clarification, explanation or examples to facilitate understanding of the concepts described. In certain cases, the notes may differ in different languages for linguistic reasons, or additional notes may be given. |

Ve vědě a technice se anglické slovo ”standard” používá ve dvou rozdílných významech: jako normativní dokument definovaný v 3.2 (ve francouzštině ”norme”) a také jako etalon (ve francouzštině ”étalon”). V tomto pokynu se uvedené slovo používá výhradně v prvním významu. Druhý význam je předmětem Mezinárodního slovníku základních a všeobecných termínů v metrologii (VIM). |
In science and technology, the English word ”standard” is used with two different meanings: as a normative document as defined in 3.2 (in French ”norme”) and also as a measurement standard (in French ”étalon”). This Guide is concerned solely with the first meaning. The second is the province of the International vocabulary of basic and general terms in metrology (VIM). |
